John “Juan” Luque is a medical anthropologist and cancer education researcher. He received his postdoctoral training in Behavioral Oncology in the Department of Health Outcomes & Behavior at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Luque received graduate-level training in applied anthropology and cultural anthropology from Arizona State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in medical anthropology, epidemiology, and social marketing from the University of South Florida. He is also an alumnus of Wesleyan University.
His research program aims to develop community-based interventions to impact health disparities in high risk, medically underserved, or racial/ethnic minority populations. His past research pursuits have included examining maternal health care seeking behavior in the Ecuadorian Andes, occupational safety practices among Florida migrant citrus harvesters, marketing cervical cancer screening outreach clinics in the Peruvian Andes, biobanking beliefs and perceptions, and knowledge and beliefs around cancer screening and prevention in medically underserved populations. He currently serves as President of the Executive Council of the American Association for Cancer Education. Overall, he has had over 100 abstracts accepted at professional meetings and conferences both nationally and internationally and has authored or co-authored over 85 scientific papers and book chapters.
